The Festival

In addition to Wener Herzog and Naomi Watts, creditors of the Donostia Prize, Brad Pitt, Noemie Merlant, Martin McDonagh, Cristian Mungiu, Pawel Pawlikowski and Ira Sachs, the head of the official jury, among others, will arrive in San Sebastian.

The festival will feature feature films by Milos Forman, Pere Portabella, Jacques Tati, Fernando Trueba, Agnes Varda and José Giovanni, and the festival will award the best music for the first time.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual trans and intersex association of the Basque Country has awarded the award to the feature film of the Mexican screenwriter and director Brumo Santamaría Razo.

The Festival and EPE-IBAIA will pay tribute to actor José Ramón Soroiz at the Grand Basque Film Gala to be held at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre on 22 September.

A total of 31 Basque productions will participate in the various sections of the 74 edition of the Festival, 19 of which will compete for the Irizar Prize for Basque Cinema.

The existentialist drama filmed in Basque focuses on life and death, combining irony, tenderness and humor. The protagonists are Iñigo Azpitarte and Izaro Nieto, owner of a civil funeral company and a young man who practices in it. 'The last farewell' will be presented in the Official Section of the Festival, within the Special Screenings, and is the third feature film by Koldo Almandoz, after Sipo Phantasma and Oreina.

Tickets for movies and dinners will be on sale this Friday, August 28, at 10 a.m., through the usual channels.

The new non-fiction work by Jorge Fernández Mayoral and Jesús Javier Ruiz Aquerreta will be presented at the San Sebastián Film Festival, within the Culinary Zinema section. Under the title Subijana, beyond a mustache, the film offers an intimate and personal account of the Guipuzcoano cook Pedro Subijana, a key figure in the great transformation and modernization of our gastronomy and a portrait of one of the main drivers of the New Basque Cuisine.

The inclusion of the film Lo dejamos acá , starring Darin, in the film festival program is a way of paying tribute to the actor, who received the Donostia Prize in 2017. 

The American actor will be in the capital of Guipuzcoana with 'Heart of the Beast', which will be shown out of competition in the Official Section.

The film, which describes what happened in a Belgian Resistance operation during World War II, will be shown out of competition on 26 September in the Kursaal following the announcement of the Palmaris.

The world premiere of the German director's new film will open the Official Section of the 74th edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival on September 18. After the opening ceremony, the film will be shown in the Kursaal Auditorium and will be the first time Akin has competed for the Golden Shell.

A total of 16 feature films will be shown in the Pearls section and all but Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano's "Juste une illusion" will compete for the San Sebastian City Public Award.

Works by Jesse Eisenberg and Fred Cavaye, among others, will be added to the ten previously announced titles in the Official Film Festival Section.

The German director, screenwriter, producer and actor will be awarded one of the Festival's most prestigious honorary awards, which Herzog will receive at the opening ceremony and present his latest film, Bucking Fastard.

Baracaldo director Javier Giner presents his first film, This Loneliness, in this section of the Festival.

The new feature films of these filmmakers will compete for the Golden Shell of the San Sebastian Festival alongside the latest works by Nicole Garcia, Maha Harada, Hans Petter Moland and Benjamin Naishtat.

The film "Ander eta Yul" (1988), by Navarre director Ana Diez, has been restored by the Basque Film Library and EITB, analyzed and manually repaired in the laboratories L'immagine Ritrovata, dependent on the Cinemateca de Bologna, as previously done, among others, with the film "Tasio".
