PlayStation will stop producing physical discs of new video games in 2028
From January 2028, new video games for PlayStation consoles will only be available in digital format, as announced on Wednesday by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), games that can be purchased at Sony's official digital store PlayStation Store or at physical stores that market digital download codes or cards.
The change is due to a "natural evolution" that will ensure that Sony can adapt to consumer trends in a much larger context than physical discs in favor of digital media. "This transition will enable us to adapt better to the way most of our community prefers to access video games and play today," the company said.
It is also a decision taken at a time when the industry is in a climate of change, as consoles have become more expensive, not least because artificial intelligence (AI) companies are increasingly demanding memory and storage chips.
On the other hand, Sony has determined that the measure will not affect physical format games marketed prior to that date.
