Osakidetza administered 274 expired vaccines in the 13 OSIs in the Basque Country by 2025
Osakidetza administered in2025an extinct dose of 274 of 21 types of vaccines, which were placed in the centres of the 13 Integrated Health Organizations (OSIs) of the Basque Country, that is, in all the CSCs.
To this number must be added another 7 extinct vaccines, which were administered in 2024 , specifically in the OSI Uribe, and 86 othersin 2023, most of them (82) in the same OSI, 3 in Donostialdea and 1 in Álava.
This data is reflected in the parliamentary response of the Department of Health to Rebeka Ubera (EH Bildu), who requested information on the expired vaccines identified by Osakidetza in the last three years until 20 February.
Since the publication of cases of expired vaccines, at the end of January, the Department of Health has reported a number of outdated vaccines.
A committee for the study and traceability of vaccines was set up to clarify the causes of the deficiencies, and the report, which was publicly presented on 3 March, concluded that 99.85% of vaccines had been administered correctlyby 2025, as noted by Health Counsellor Alberto Martínez.
However, the committee of inquiry's report acknowledged that there had been a number of errors in the traceability phases of vaccines and explained that the acquisition of more doses than usual had contributed to the accumulation of stock, resulting in the use of batches close to the expiry date.
Batches with a useful life of less than six months were also received, when the most common is one year, which caused the vaccine to have to be administered more quickly.
In addition, during some phases of the storage and distribution of vaccines in health centres, batch and expiry information was managed with partial systems and "not always" integrated into a single system.
The counselor stated that most of these doses were placed at the health centre in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa), within the OSI Donostialdea, and isolated cases were recorded in the other health regions. According to data now sent by the Department of Health to EH Bildu, these errors affected all OSIs.
In 2025, the largest number of outdated vaccines were administered in the OSI Donostialdea (79), followed by Bilbao-Basurto (50), Álava (33), Uribe (32), Barakaldo-Sestao (26), Ezkerraldea-Enkarterri-Cruces (18), Goierri (10), Tolosaldea (10)
