A major forest fire breaks out in Girona
The uncontrolled forest fire in the Les Gavarres massif in the Baix Empordà (Girona) has already burned 1,280 hectares and the smoke column of the flames has reached 4-5 kilometres high this Friday, as confirmed by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat), which has ordered the authorities to confine some 12,000 people on the Costa Brava.
At the same time, there is another active fire in the town centre of Vilavenut, in the municipality of Fontcoberta (Girona), which has burned about 35 hectares and closed five roads along with the neighbourhood of Gavarres.

The Mossos d'Escaladra identified and arrested a man this Friday for his alleged connection to the Les Gavarres fire.
According to the Mosses, the fire originated while the detainee was working with a radial near the road and the police have recalled that these tasks are currently prohibited because of the high risk of fire.
