UPV will award the Gold Medal to Nekane Balluerka, Jose Angel Iribar and Carlos Garaikoetxea
The rectoral team has highlighted their humanity and commitment to the Euskera and the people , among other things, to the award of the Gold Medal. The awards will be distributed at the beginning of the course, which will take place on the Gipuzkoa campus on 10 September, according to UPV/EHU sources.
Nekane Balluerka Lasa (Ordizia, Gipuzkoa, 1966) has been the first woman elected rector by the UPV/EHU, and taking advantage of her role in the transformation of the university, the UPV/EHU leadership team has highlighted her leadership.
As rector, the UPV/EHU made a significant qualitative and quantitative leap in the training and research at the heart of the university, increasing its supply and promoting a new talent attraction program. In addition, the university managed to raise 100 positions in the Shanghai ranking, jumping among the 400 best universities in the world.
Balluerka, he stressed, is an "exemplary, hardworking, beloved leader," who worked "for feminism and equality by renewing the protocol against male violence and taking pioneering measures for non-discrimination." UPV-EHU was the first university to increase the choice of non-binary gender in student choices.
UPV/EHU Rector Joxerramon Bengoetxea recalled that the university public will award the gold medal to a woman for the first time in recognition of Balluerka.
On the other hand, beyond the sporting myth, the UPV has highlighted the love and commitment shown by Jose Angel Iribar (Zarautz, Gipuzkoa, 1943) to Euskal Herria and the Euskera, as well as his "social commitment".
According to the UPV/EHU, "it has constantly contributed to the promotion of sport as a school of values, especially among young people", and thus has sought to recognize how it has incorporated "teamwork, perseverance, respect and the principles of effort, taking root in the indigenous world, but reflecting the collective identity open to the world, as the UPV itself usually does".
Finally, the UPV recalls that the Government led by Carlos Garaikoetxea(Pamplona, 1938) took the step of creating the University of the Basque Country on 25 February 1980. Well, the UPV-EHU Governing Council has decided to recognize this important step towards higher education as "a sign of its political commitment to this country, which led it to resign as president."
