New vestiges of Neolithic cannibalism have been found in Atapuerca
A team of researchers have found at least 11 remains of people at the Atapuerca site that are about 5,700 years old and have marks of skin, bone and meat separation, cooking and consumption.
Traces of a child's collarbone with cutting marks that reveal cannibalism practices.
A group of researchers have discovered another new case of cannibalism in the caves of El Mirador, at the Atapuerca site in Burgos. It has been reported that this event occurred 5,700 years ago, atthe end of the Neolithic, due to local conflicts, without any evidence of any connection with ceremonies or rituals.
The Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Development (IPHES) has reported that the bones found correspond toat least 11 people, showing evidence that they were skinned, separated from bone and flesh, broken, cooked and finally consumed .
Yet the same institute has emphasized that the symbolic burden of cannibalism is one of the most complex ways of interpreting it, because of the complexity of mere consumption by other humans.
IPHES has stressed the importance of the finding because it did not know that there was cannibalism at the time, so it is confirmed that this behavior is "much more common" than was thought.
It should be noted that another case of cannibalism was documented in the cave of El Mirador, located in the Bronze Age between 4,600 and 4,100 years ago.
No ceremonies, no famines
The bones have been found in very good condition, where ithas been possible to identify cutting marks, fractures to reach the marrow, traces of cooking and even marks of human teeth.
IPHES reported that all the people consumed were indigenous and "consumed" in a short period of time, so it appears that this could be an act of violence between local rural communities.
