Who are the five Basques on the list of the richest in Forbes?
Donostiarra Daniel Mate, linked to Glencore, heads the Basque delegation on the Forbes list, followed by the De Urrutia, Ybarra, Arregui and steel entrepreneur José Antonio Jainaga, who despite the stock exchanges have maintained the weight of the rich in the Basque Country on the economic map of the state.
Five Basque names are among the 100 richest in Spain, according to the ranking published by Forbes. Although some of them have reduced their assets as a result of market developments, they generally maintain a strong position and strengthen the economic weight of the Basque Country in the business landscape of the State.
Amancio Ortega, founder and main shareholder of Inditex, remains the richest man in Spain, with an estate of 109.9 billion euros, according to this year's Forbeslistin . Although it has lost about 10.3 billion (8.6% less) compared to the previous year, the Galician entrepreneur continues to collect42.5% of the 100 largest fortunes in Spain, an unprecedented proportion in Europe.
Donostiarra Daniel Mate, the third shareholder of the Anglo-Swiss multinational Glencore, remains the richest Basque, with a wealth of 2,500 million euros . However, the stock market collapse of the mining and metallurgy group (more than 15% in the last 12 months) has reduced its assets by about 600 million, falling from ninth place to 13th place.
In the area of investment, Victor de Urrutia Vallejo and his son, at the head of Asua Inversiones, occupy the 71st position with 700 million euros, 100 million more than last year. Through the family society they control the shares in the wineries CVNE, ENCE, Iberdrola, Rovi and Proeduca, reinforcing a diversified strategy that has withstood market volatility.
