Foronda has released flights connecting Madrid and Barcelona
There will be four a week between Vitoria-Gasteiz and the two cities, but it will temporarily be two a week in January.
The airline Volotea has released new flights between Foronda Airport and Madrid and Barcelona Airport. Those responsible for these two new routes have said they hope that this will only be a first step and that there will be new connections.
So far, the only airline operating at Araba Airport was Ryanair. From today, Volotea will connect Foronda with Madrid and Barcelona four times a week, in both cases on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.
In January, after Christmas, there will only be two flights a week, but temporarily, as in February it will return to four frequencies.
In total, it will offer 133,000 seats over the next two months.
Volotea has come with the intention of "continuing sustainable growth in the coming years" in Foronda, said Gabriel Schmilovich, the company's chief strategy officer, who also aims to attract people from other areas around Álava.
The event was attended by the Spanish Government delegate, Marisol Garmendia, the General Deputy, Ramiro González, and the Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarria.
Gonzalez expects Foronda to have half a million passengers a year and AENA, the airport manager, to invest in it, such as increasing parking.
