Almost half of the nurses and physiotherapists in the Basque Country have suffered offensive comments, according to a survey by the SATSE Nursing Union. More than 85% of the cases are reported. The study has been released on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
48.45% of health professionals claim to have suffered offensive sexist comments or jokes. The survey is part of a awareness-raising strategy under the slogan "Yes, it happens... it's harassment" .
According to SATSE, 25.28 per cent have intentionally invaded their personal space and 27.54 per cent have felt undervalued or treated with kindness. In addition, 22.60 per cent claim to have had unsolicited physical contact and 9.60 per cent acknowledge that they do not wish to make an attempt to have an appointment or receive sexual proposals, even though they made it clear that they did not.
The union also points out that sex conditions the treatment received for 41.67 per cent of respondents. Almost 30 per cent have heard stories or jokes of abusive sexual content, 25.99 per cent have suffered insinuating looks, 21.61 per cent have wanted to touch or touch, and 20.06 per cent have received calls for attention of a sexual nature.
Despite this reality, 85.54 per cent of the situations have not been reported to the centre and have not been reported, often for ignorance of protocols (44.39 per cent) or lack of confidence in the effectiveness of protocols (30.61 per cent).
In view of this data, SATSE has called for adequate working conditions to prevent sexual harassment and strict compliance with equality plans and protocols for early detection and reporting, as well as for assistance and advice to victims. The union has stressed the need to continue raising awareness among institutions, businesses and society in order to eradicate violence at work and has called for this type of harassment to be included as a psychosocial risk in occupational risk assessments.
