The combination of holidays and the annual closure of Mercabilbao will leave fishmongers without supplies between 26 and 30 December.
Bizkaia will experience an exceptional situation during the last days of the year: five consecutive days there will be no fresh fish for sale in the fishmongers' shops in the country. The reason is not the lack of catch, but the chain effect that will cause the wholesale market in Mercabilbao to close on 26 December, along with the Christmas holiday calendar.
On Christmas Day, 25 December, the shops are closed because it is a holiday, and the next day Mercabilbao, located in Basauri and the main food distribution centre in the north of the state, will cease its activity, as it does every year on that day. In the absence of wholesale activity, the fish will not reach the establishments in the following days, so it will not be able to be marketed until 30 December inclusive.
This stop will affect the municipal markets, the Ribera de Bilbao Market and the retail fishmongers in Bizkaia. From the sector they stress that this is an exceptional situation that has not occurred since 2014 and that demonstrates the dependence of local trade on the operation of the logistics centre.
