Births in the Basque Country have fallen by 0.1% again, after two quarters of growth
By territory, there was a 3.2 per cent year-on-year increase in Álava, with 547 births; in Bizkaia there was a 4.7 per cent decrease in Bizkaia with 1,616 births; and in Gipuzkoa there was an increase of 5.5 per cent with 1,129 births.
In the third quarter of 2025, 3,292 children were born inthe Basque Country, which is 0.1% less (4 less) than in the same period of the previous year, since in the first half of the year there were increases of more than 2% in both quarters.

According to the order of birth, more than half, 1,711, were first children; 1,135 (34.5 per cent) reached families where there was another child, and third or subsequent births accounted for 13.5 per cent. In the same period of 2024, the latter was 12.4 per cent.
According to theage of the mother , the group with the highest number of births was the 30-34 age group (35 per cent), followed by the 35-39 age group (33 per cent), so that 68 per cent of births were women between the ages of 30 and 40.
The lower percentages were for the 25-29 age group (14.4 per cent) and the under-25 age group (7.4 per cent), with 10.2 per cent for mothers aged 40 and over, with the percentage of children under 25 being higher among single mothers (11.3 per cent).
In the summer of last year, 27.9 per cent of births were foreign mothers, compared to 25.7 per cent in the same period in 2024; by territory, this percentage rose to 34.4 per cent in Álava, falling to 26.9 per cent and 26.1 per cent in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
