Euskadi closes Easter with less traffic than planned and no road deaths
Compared to 2025, travel in the Basque Country fell by 0.2% and the number of accidents decreased by 29%.
The Basque Country has closed the 2026 Easter traffic operation with a slightly lower volume of traffic and no fatalities than planned. In the special operation there were an average of 534,000 departures and departures, a decrease of about 0.2% compared to the same period last year. According to data provided by the Basque Government, the rainfall recorded on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 April conditioned mobility and slowed down some of the initially planned journeys.
On the other hand, cross-border traffic has experienced a significant increase. The Biriatou Pass recorded an increase of 6.4% compared to Easter 2025. This figure far exceeds the initial forecasts and is attributed to summer temperatures recorded from Saturday 4 April until Easter Monday. With regard to access to the Basque capitals, Bilbao recorded a decrease of 4% in entries, while San Sebastián recorded an increase of 2%.
Easter has also left a significant improvement in road safety. Between 1 and 6 April, 78 traffic accidents were recorded in the Basque Country, with no deaths and five serious injuries. This figure represents a 29% decrease in accidents compared to 2025, when 110 accidents were recorded. The Department of Safety and Security has highlighted the positive development of the data and the absence of fatalities in the entire special device.
The main traffic problems were concentrated at the usual points of the road network, but they were less than the withholding of 2025. In Bizkaia, the largest traffic congestion occurred on 4 April on the A-8 motorway in the Cantabria sense, resulting in 9 kilometres of withholding.
