More than half of the Basque population believes that the next generation will have fewer opportunities than today's
According to a study by the Department of Social Welfare, 82% believe that intergenerational solidarity is a pillar in Basque society.
52% of Basques believe that the next generations will have fewer opportunities than the current ones, according to a study by the Basque Government in which 82% of respondents believe that intergenerational solidarity is one of the pillars of Basque society.
On Monday, the Department of Social Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge presented the resultsofthe study "Intergenerational Solidarity among the Basque People", which confirms that citizens see intergenerational solidarity as a country and as an essential tool for strengthening social cohesion.
The study, based on 1,280 telephone interviews with persons aged 18 or over registered in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa from 6 to 10 October 2025, shows that 83%of citizens believe that intergenerational solidarity is a matter for society as a whole.
Similarly, 82% believe that it improves social cohesion, 82% believe that it must be a pillar of Basque society and 77% say that it allows people, at any age, to start and maintain an independent life.
Based on the data, Social Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge Counselor Nerea Melgosa has stressed that generational solidarity "is not an abstract concept, but a way to ensure that no one is left behind at any stage of life and that today's well-being does not jeopardize tomorrow's opportunities. "
The report also notes concern for the future. 60% of citizens believe that their generation has had more opportunities than their predecessors and 52% believe that the next generation will have fewer opportunities than the current ones. In this context, citizens are calling for measures to enable them tomaintain an independent life throughoutthe life cycle , improve the opportunities of young people, strengthen the opportunities of the elderly and design public services that respond to all ages.
There is also broad agreement on the need to strengthen public aid , as the number of elderly persons in need of care is increasing; and they stress the need to provide aid on the basis of equality in terms of income and property, regardless of age.
