The Department of Health of the Basque Government has activated the Advisory Council on Emerging Infectious Diseases of the Basque Country to monitor the hantvirus alert detected on board the MV Hondius to the Canary Islands and to anticipate any health impact.
The body is headed by Gontzal Tamayo, a specialist in public health, microbiology, infectious diseases, epidemiology and hospital care, and is responsible for analysing available information and providing technical advice to the Department of Health in the face of new health threats.
The Group has already held an initial review meeting and has issued a preliminary technical opinion on the basis of available official information.
The report concludes that, in the current situation, the risk to the Basque Country is very low, since no cases or contacts have been detected, and that no person residing in the community is among the passengers identified so far.
