A man has been arrested in Vitoria-Gasteiz on charges of illegal trafficking in persons
Twelve people aged between 24 and 48 were travelling in the vehicle he was driving, who have been transferred to police stations for identification and will soon make arrangements with foreigners, and several passports have been found in the search of the van.
A 36-year-old man was arrested early this Saturday morning by the Ertzaintza on charges of illegal human trafficking after beinghit while driving in a van with 12 people on board, exceeding the permitted capacity of the vehicle, according to the Department of Safety and Security.
The events took place around 01:20 hours on the N-622 at theheight of Vitoria-Gasteiz , at a traffic checkpoint of the Ertzaintza, at which point the agents found that the van was carrying thedriver and 11 other persons, althoughitwas intended for a maximum of 9 persons.
Upon identification of the occupants, the officers found that onlythe driver was carrying the documentation, while the rest had no documentation and gave conflicting versions of the origin, destination and reason of the journey.
The passengers, men between the ages of 24 and 48 , have been transferred to police stations for identification and are expected to make arrangements with foreigners in the near future .
The search of the van found the passports of some passengers and documents of others who were not in the vehicle.
The driver is under arrest and will be taken into custody after the police proceedings have been completed.
