Five people have died and one has been injured in the collision between a van and a lorry. The five occupants of the vehicles are also Navarre law enforcement officers who were going to practice in Iurreta.
The president, Imanol Pradales, and the president of the government of Navarre, María Chivite, have expressed their dismay at the serious accidentthat killed five people on the AP-8 motorway off Elgoibar on Wednesday.
In a social media message, Pradales said visibly excited that today is a "black day"for the Basque roads and confessed to feeling" sadness, anger and powerlessness. "
On the same level, the President of the Navarre Government has expressed her pain at the death of the victims who belonged to the foral community: "I am appalled by the terrible accident in which five members of the Foral Police have died," Chivite said.
Official sources from the Navarre Government have confirmed that the five fatalities were Foral policeofficers, all members of the Intervention Brigade, who were travelling together in a van to the Ertzaintza base in Iurreta (Bizkaia) to participate in a technical training day.
The accident occurred at around 9.15 a.m. at kilometre 69 in Maltzaga, when the police van collided violently with a tanker truck, whose driver was injured and taken to hospital.
