The Basque Government has launched a plan against the tiger mosquito after detecting it in 72 Basque municipalities
Monitoring will begin on 15 June and will continue until the middle of autumn, the period of greatest activity of the tiger mosquito, which has already been detected in at least 72 municipalities covering a large part of the population of the CSC, which has led to increased prevention against this invasive dspezie, especially in cooperation with municipalities.
The Department of Health of the Basque Government has activated this summer the Tiger Mosquito Detection Programme, which has already beendetected in 72 municipalities of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country Enternational , especially in densely populated urban areas, and which reinforces the need to maintain active and sustainable surveillance .
Surveillance will begin on June 15 and extend until the middle of autumn , the peak tiger mosquito activity period, so surveillance will take place in about 50 municipalities: 15 in Álava, 19 in Bizkaia and 16 in Gipuzkoa.
The program, which has been in operation since 2013, is based on an insect sampling system caught in traps that are installed in cities and suburban areas, which allows monitoring the presence and distribution of the mosquito and assessing the risk in each territory.
Guillermo Herrero, Director of Public Health and Addictions of the Department of Health of the Basque Government, explained on Thursday that "control of the tiger mosquito is essential to prevent the transmission of viral diseases such as dengue, zika or chikungunya, and the best preventive strategy is to prevent and avoid conditions that facilitate their reproduction. "
In the fight against the spread of this insect, citizen cooperation and the workof municipal services are essential in finding and eliminating possible breeding grounds ; what is sought is to avoid and eliminate segregation, water accumulations, in which I find the best conditions for mosquito reproduction.
To assist in this task, the Department of Health and the NEIKER technology center have developed a guide for municipalities, which is a "laurel box" aimed at preventing, monitoring and raising awareness of this mosquito in order to provide a "coordinated and effective response" based on the technical knowledge of the species.
What to do if you get bitten by a tiger mosquito?
The tiger mosquito is black , small (about 5 mm) and has a white line 1 on the head and chest. It usually grips in daylight and is common to give more than one bite. Compared to other mosquitoes, its bites can be more painful and cause an intense reaction. In the case of mosquitoes, it is recommended towash the area with soap and water, as well as to apply cold to stop inflammation and relieve itching.
If the reaction is very strong and causes discomfort or difficulty breathing, health care should be sought.
Persons travelling to a risk area , within 15 days of their return, must take extreme measures of self-protection to prevent mosquito bites, unknowns and contagion to other people, and if they begin to experience fever, pain or discomfort, they must immediately consult their health centre, which is able to transmit diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya.
