The new taxi ordinance in Vitoria-Gasteiz has received majority support from the sector and is in the process of being adopted
The safety of professionals and minimum night services are some of the areas that can be improved, for which the City Council will maintain the forecast of 50 taxis.
The Deputy Mayor of the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Councillor of Public Space and Neighborhoods, Beatriz Artolazabal, haswelcomed the support of the majority of the taxi sector for the new ordinance regulating the service, which is "good news for the future of the taxi", said the councilwoman, who explained that this shows that "the work done over a year and a half has gone in the right direction".
Artolazabal has stated that the proposal was rejected a few months ago, but the City Council continued to work with professionals to listen to their proposals, clarify doubts and bring positions closer together.
"We have always believed that we were dealing with a good ordinance," Artolazabal valued, stressing that "the support ofthe sector allows us to movefrom the dialogue phase to the adoption phase of the ordinance necessary for the future of the taxi ".
Thus, the City Council will resume contact with the political groups in order to implement the adoption of the ordinance as soon as possible. In fact, in recent months there have been several rounds of meetings with all political parties and, as Artolazabal recalled, support for the sector was a "key element" in their support for the new regulation.
At the same time, progress has been made in administrative proceedings, and once completed, the draft will be submitted topublic information and allegations may be made. The municipal services shall examine the proposals made.
Minimum services and security
Artolazabal also recalls the City Council's commitment to continue working with the sector and towork on issues that can be improved , including some aspects related tothe organization of minimumnight services .
In this regard, he has indicated that the forecast of 50 taxis serving on Saturday mornings and public holidaysremains "intact", considering that it adequately meets the city's current needs, although he has explained that the measure will be evaluated after some time to consider whether adjustments should be made.
The City Council will also continue to develop the measures envisaged to strengthen the safety of professionals, such as improving the response to incidents in the on-call services and supporting the installation of cameras, screens and other protective elements in vehicles.
