Research in the Basque Country has lived through an excellent year and has supported 725 R & D & i projects, according to the Department of Health

The Department of Health and Osakidetza presented on Wednesday in Bilbao the Health R & D & i Activity Report of 2025, which shows a significant growth in biomedicalresearch in the Basque Country, with 725 research projects developed funded through competitive calls, 59 of which have been international.
In addition, the Basque Health System has received EUR 19.6 million from international funds, consolidating its participation in European research programmes. The main areas of activity have been oncology, neurology, mental health, microbiology, infectious diseases, geriatrics, genetics, cardiovascular diseases and endocrinology.
Growth of 40 per cent
Memory also reflects the increase in clinical research. In 2025, 440 new patients were involved in clinical trials with drugs, bringing the cumulative number of patientssince 2022 to 2,455. Similarly, the number of new clinical trials in the last two years has increased by 40%.
In the scientific field, the Basque Country obtained 1,938 infamous scientific publications, 7% more than the previous year, 65% of which were published in first-quartile journals, with an average impact factor of 7.38.
Health Counselor Alberto Martínez has stated that "the best investment that can be made in health does not start in a hospital; it starts in research" and has stressed that patients are "our reason for research."
According to the report, the Basque Health System has 3,281 health research and innovation professionals, 72% of whom are from Osakidetza and almost 61%are women. In total, health research has received EUR 32 million through external competitive funding, 9% more than the previous year, to which must be added EUR 23 million from the Department of Health.
