Israel takes two Global Sumud Flotilla activists and releases the rest in Crete
According to the Israeli Government, two Global Sumud Flotilla activists (Saif abu Kesh and Thiago Ávila) have been arrested for questioning after intercepting more than 20 vessels in international waters in the Mediterranean. The remaining 170 have been released and landed on the Greek island of Crete with the help of the Greek Government.
Israel justifies the operation on the grounds that activists were attempting to break Gaza's "legitimate maritime blockade" and accuses the initiative of being linked to Hamas's interests and a "political provocation."
The Global Sumud Flotilla has called for the immediate release of the two activists and has called on international governments to press against Israel, calling the arrests "illegal."
For its part, the Peace Commission has criticized the flotilla for its "performative activism" and has argued that humanitarian aid should be channelled through its structure, referring to the current ceasefire and the international plan for the reconstruction of Gaza.
