Basque cinema welcomes Maialen Beloki
Jose Luis Rebordinos, the director who will give the witness this year, and filmmakers Koldo Almandoz and Lara Izagirre tell us about Beloki's appointment as head of the Festival.
The Board of Directors of the Festival, a body composed of representatives of the City of San Sebastián, the Diputación de Gipuzkoa, the Basque Government and the Ministry of Culture, last night appointed Maialen Beloki (San Sebastián, 1983) as the new director of the film festival.
Beloki, who has been one of the Festival's deputy directors since 2016, has stressed that Bera's nomination "reinforces his commitment to a profile that combines strategic vision, knowledge of the sector and commitment to cultural development."
José Luis Rebordinos welcomes Beloki before making him available on 31 December this year; "I am very pleased that the Board of Directors of the Festival has appointed a person from my team."
"Once the nomination is made, I have to work very closely with Maialen in the coming months to get to January 2027 with as much knowledge as possible about the Festival. In this case, it will not be difficult, as far as the deputy director is concerned, since he is part of the management team and therefore knows very well the details of the festival," said Rebordinos, who is outside San Sebastian.
Filmmaker Lara Izagirre (Un otoño sin Berlin, Nora) has also welcomed the relay: "The change has been very encouraging for the industry as a whole and I wish you all the best. It's a nice change."
The filmmaker Koldo Almandoz (The Deer, The Sand Mouths, The Sky Mouths...), for his part, has stated that this is a "logical and reasonable change" and that he has "knowledge" of Basque and international cinema.
So, if he asked for anything, the film director has explained, he would ask him to be "critical" and "help him establish a solid ground to continue to have the opportunity to work beyond the current bubble."
