After Mazon's resignation, what's the stage?
The People's Leader will not renounce the Act of Deputies and will continue to be eligible. He has not announced any electoral advance and the deadline for electing his replacement will be opened on Monday, once he has formally resigned. The groups will have until 19 November to present their candidates.
One year after the GOIDI, which left 229 dead in the Valencian Community, the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has guessed that he is leaving office, saying that he "can no longer" and explaining himself as a political victim. He has also said that he will leave the reconstruction work "well on track" and has asked the PP and Vox, the majority in the Courts, to act "responsibly" to elect the new president as soon as possible.
In this new scenario, for now, there are many questions in the air:
Acting President
A few hours after announcing his resignation to the media, Mazon has formally presented his resignation to the Courts, so that the Valencian Courts can appoint the new president in the last week of November.
He has not announced an election advance, so he will remain in office as President until his replacement is appointed and his name published in the Official Gazette of the State.
Except for last-minute surprises, this Tuesday the government meeting of the Generalitat will be chaired by Mazon himself.
Deadlines for the election of a new president
Under the Rules of Procedure of the Valencian Parliament, the groups now have 12 days to submit their nominations to the Bureau of the Courts, after which it will be up to the Presidency of the Courts to set a date for the investiture session. After a round of consultations with the groups, they will propose the candidate with the most support for the presidency.
Thus, the groups will have until 19 November to submit their nominations, and the investiture session can be convened between 24 and 28 this month.
Two months later, if there were no candidate supported by a majority of the Courts, parliament would be dissolved and elections would be called.
Gitza, Vox.
Vox will inevitably need the approval of the candidate proposed by the People's Party; the people have 40 seats in the Valencian chamber, and in order to have a majority, Vox needs the support of 13 deputies, just like when Mazon was elected in 2023.
Now, the far-right party has assured us that it has not initiated any dialogue with the PP to discuss this issue. Likewise, Vox's President, Santiago Abascal, has been very critical of Mazon's election today to announce his resignation, the date on which the trial against State Attorney General Alvaro García Ortiz begins.
To take Mazon's witness, possible names
In this scenario that has opened, the person who will take Mazon's witness must be a Member of Parliament. One of the names that is hearing the most in recent days is Juanfran Pérez Llorca, a PP member in the Cortes and general secretary of the PP in Valencia.
Among the candidates would also be the mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, although she has repeatedly denied it. When asked about this possibility, she claims that her political future is in the city of Valencia.
The leadership of the Valencia PP, in the air
In the People's Party, Mazon's position is also in the air. The leadership of the PP in the Valencian Community is now in his hands, but according to some sources he may even be about to lose that position. Vicent Mompo, president of the Valencia Council, can take over the party with the support of the majority of his party colleagues.
