Today is Memory Day, with institutional events in the Basque Parliament and in the Basque capitals
Today is the Day of Remembrance, with various institutional events in memory of the victims of terrorism and violence, which the Basque Parliament will open with a tribute at 10 a.m. and then the central event organised by the Basque Government and the Gogora Institute at noon in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The Basque Parliament will hold an institutional event at 10 a.m. on the occasion of Memory Day, in which representatives of all political parties and relatives of victims will take part. The tribute serves to commemorate all those who suffered violence in the Basque Country and to vindicate a shared memory.
At noon the Basque Government and the Gogora Institute organized at the Palacio Europa de Vitoria-Gasteiz the central event of the day, presided over by the Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, and the Counsellor for Justice and Human Rights, María Jesús San José, in which the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Council of Álava will join in a message of recognition.
The main municipalities of theBasque Country have also organized their own events. In Bilbao, the City Council celebrated for the first time the Day of Remembrance in the new sculptural space Atalase, between the Guggenheim and the Basque Square. In the tribute, presided over by Mayor Juan Mari Aburto, a floral offering will be made in memory of all the victims, with the participation of the General Member of Bizkaia.
In Donostia-San Sebastián, for its part, the City Council has convened a rally at noon in the monolith of the memory of Alderdi Eder, attended by the mayor, Jon Insausti, and municipal representatives.
The day aims to be one more year a meeting point for memory, reflection and commitment to inclusive memory and peaceful coexistence.
