Etxanobe will bring back to the CTB a proposal to extend discounts on public transport
The General Representative of Bizkaia has defended the full competence of the Consortium to set tariffs and has explained that he hopes to reach an agreement before the end of 1 January.
The GeneralRepresentative of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe , has announced the readmission of public transporttothe Council of the Bizkaia Transport Consortium of the proposal to extend the current discounts to 20 February , whichwas rejected by the opposition of the PSE-EE on Wednesday.
The Member asks the Socialists to clarify what are the'legal doubts' and ensures that the proposal has all the technical and legal guarantees of the Consortium itself.
Etxanobe recalled that the extension aims to provide a security framework in the face of the uncertainty created by the Spanish Government's lack of decision on the financing of discounts.
"We do not know what the Sánchez Government is going to do and, in this context, I called on the CTB to provide a framework of guarantees," the Member stressed at an event in Barakaldo.
The MEP has insisted that the CTB is competent to 'set any tariffs it deems appropriate, regardless of what the central government is going to do', and has stressed that a similar measure was implemented in 2024 'without any problems'. Etxanobe has therefore stressed that the PSE must express and verify the doubts expressed.
With regard to the information provided by the Foral sources that theProvincial Councilof Bizkaia will continue to negotiate to "channel the proposal" and compensate the Biscayans despite the Council's refusal, Etxanobe recalled that there is also the possibility of activating an urgent procedure if the lack of agreement continues.
As a result, Elixabete Etxanobe has pledged to take the extension to the CTB and has expressed his wish that the issue be resolved as soon as possible: "My goal is to have certainty on 1 January. It is an important issue for the citizens and I hope that an agreement will be reached."
