NGOs have taken the case of Iratxe Sorzabal to the UN
The ECHR has approached the United Nations on the occasion of the case of former ETA leader Iratxe Sorzabal, who has presented the case to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and has called for "the imprescriptibility of the crime of torture to be expressly stated as an international obligation and commitment to ensure that its enforcement by the States is inevitable and not used as an argument permitting impunity for offenders".
In addition to the international petition, the ECHR has filed an application to the National High Court for the reopening of the torture case pending resolution.
The reports have been submitted to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and this is the first time such a case has come to the fore.
