The Ikurriña has been left out of the legislative debate in Idaho and will be able to remain in official buildings
The Basque Government reiterates that the Ikurriña will not be banned following the explanations sent by the lehendakari to the House of Representatives of the State of Idaho.
Ikurriña will not finally be banned in the State of Idaho and may continue to be placed in existing official buildings. According to sources from the Basque Government consulted by EITB, Ikurriña has been expressly excluded from the legislative debate in the House of Representatives of that American state.
The debate arose on 29 January, when Republican Representative Hill took part in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Idaho Chamber in the context of the debate on a bill on the display of flags in public spaces. Although the legal text never mentioned the Ikurriña, his statements caused unease in the Basque diaspora in the United States.
It was precisely the Basque community in Idaho that conveyed to the Basque Government, through the General Secretariat for External Action, its concern. From that moment on, the Presidency decided to intervene. According to the same sources, the criterion was "not to interfere in the internal affairs of the State of Idaho" and to confine itself to clarifying claims that they considered inaccurate.
In this context, President Imanol Pradales sent a letter to the chairman of the Idaho House of Representatives Committee on Monday, February 9. The letter was delivered in hand at Tuesday's session, February 10, for reading or, failing that, entering the committee's official register.
Following this hearing, on Wednesday, the Basque Government learned that the Ikurriña was excluded from the debate as a result of the explanations given by Pradales. According to the Presidency, the Ikurriña is an integrated national flag of Spain and is therefore not subject to the restrictions provided for in the proposed law. In any case, the Basque Government stresses that the original text of the law "never mentions the Ikurriña".
According to sources from the Basque Government, Ikurriña may, if so decided, continue to be placed in the public and government spaces of Idaho.
