The Basque Parliament has adopted an initiative calling on the Spanish Government to reinstate the obligation to have prior authorization from the labour authority for the employment regulation dossier (LEE), which was abolished with the 2012 labour reform.
The proposal has been successful by a large majority thanks to the agreement between PNV, PSE-EE, EH Bildu and Sumar, in the face of the refusal of PP and Vox, and the Basque Government has been urged to strengthen the role of the Labour Inspectorate in ensuring compliance with the law and to promote agreements between companies and workers' representatives to prevent or reduce traumatic redundancies.
In the opinion of EH Bildu, who has promoted the debate, companies should not have the unilateral capacity to carry out collective redundancies without prior administrative control. In this regard, he referred to recent cases in the Basque Country. According to the data provided in plenary, last year around 1,200 people lost their jobs in the autonomous community as a result of the LEE, especially in the Alavesa region of Ayala.
