The Spanish Government will transfer to the Basque Government on Monday the competence over the Zubieta prison
On Tuesday, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved the transfer to the Basque Country of jurisdiction over the Martutene prison in the Donostiarra district\u00A0Zubieta.
The transfer was agreed by a Royal Decree on Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, "once the works of the new prison have been completed" and "when the centre is ready to reopen".
Thus, it is planned that on 24 Junethe Government will lose ownership of the former Martutene prison, where official housing will be built, and the Martutene prison will be demolished.
These steps will therefore meet the deadlines set in February by Housing Counsellor Denis Itxaso and Justice Counsellor Maria Jesús San José, who announcedthe openingof the new prison between May and June 2026, and the launchofthe Martutene prison in the first half of the year 2027 for the construction of a residential area with400 homes .
Itxaso advanced three months ago that the project to demolish the Martutene prison would be awarded through the Visesa Public Society. That will cost about EUR 4 million.
On the other hand, the Justice Counsellor pointed out that the opening of Zubieta will be a milestone in the consolidation of the Basque prison model.
