The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has again called on the PNV and Junts to support a motion of censure aimed at removing Pedro Sánchez, but on this occasion he has made a concrete proposal: to table an instrumental motion of censure to "clean up the institutions and call elections."
The president of the PP has made this proposal concrete on Monday, stressing that Vox would not be part of that interim government. "To call elections we do not need Vox to be in government, "he said.
The PP leader, however, has pointed out that in the forthcoming elections, the Spanish will decide whether they want a government between the PP and Vox.
There are184 MPswho want elections to be called, eight more than are needed to form an absolute majority. If those who say so act consistently, we can find a way out in a short time, he said.
However, the PP leader has clarified that he will not table a motion of censure if the necessary support is not secured, which, in his view, would distract attention from corruption cases linked to the PSOE and "change the subject of dialogue."
Message to the PNV and Junts
Feijóo has thus delegated responsibility for the decision to the PNV and Junts. "I will assume my responsibility and I will not take those that do not belong to me. I am very interested in seeing what the government partners are going to do," he said.
Feijóo has described the current situation as "critical" and stressed that the legislature is "exhausted." "What do the voters of the PNV and Junts think? They are as angry as the rest of thecitizens.
Appeal to the territorial leaders of the PSOE
On the other hand, Feijóo has also asked the territorial leaders of the PSOE to take steps to remove Sanchez. "I ask the socialists to take steps. This is not a matter for Feijóo. There are hundreds of mayors, MPs from the autonomous communities, and they have two or three autonomous presidents left, "he said.
Time limits for the convening of elections
By law, two conditions must be met for elections to be called after a motion of censure, on the one hand, a minimum of one year has elapsed since the last dissolution of the Courts, a condition that has been fulfilled, since almost three years have passed since the July 2023 elections.
On the other hand, an election must take place within at least 54 days, so that if the president is appointed by an instrumental motion of censure, Feijóo must hold office at least that time before the election.
However, Feijóo has suggested that before elections are called immediately, they could be in government for a while, "to clean up the institutions."
