The Basque Country reaffirms its commitment to the 2030 World Cup with a "proposal in the general interest", according to Bengoetxea
The First Vice-President and Councillor for Culture and Linguistic Policy has defended the proposal that Bilbao and San Sebastián have submitted to FIFA to form a joint headquarters, a formula that he believes aims to benefit Basque citizens.
The Basque institutions have reaffirmed their commitment to hosting the 2030 World Cup matches, as stated on Monday by the Vice-President and Adviser for Culture and Linguistic Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea, after the Basque Government, the deputies of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, the municipalities of Bilbao and San Sebastián, the Athletic Club and the Royal Society sent a joint proposal to FIFA.
Bengoetxea explained in Bilbao that the institutions have fulfilled their commitments to FIFA bysubmitting the required documentation and the economic proposals within the deadline set.
According to the proposal, the Basque Country would have only one seat for the 2030 World Cup, consisting of the stadiums of San Mamés and Reale Arena , a formula which, accordingto theVice-President, allows us to maintain the commitment to organise the championship without giving up the competition on Basque territory.
"We reaffirm our commitment to having the opportunity to play the world championship here," said Bengoetxea, who stressed that the initiative has been designed "in the general interest of the Basques."
The Councillor also recalls that for at least two years the Basque institutions have raised a number of issues relating to the organisation of the event, which they consider necessary to ensure that the event takes place in the best conditions.
Bengoetxea has stressed that these demands are not yet met and are essential if the World Cup is to be held with guarantees and benefits for citizens.
The proposal put forwardtakes up these demands and advocates that Bilbao and San Sebastián should have a joint headquarters as an alternative to the Basque Country's participation in the 2030 World Cup.
