On Thursday, Congress approved a bill promoted by Sumarr to allow persons born in Western Sahara before 1977 and their descendants to receive Spanish nationality, a step that has been described as "historic" by most of the Saharan parties and representatives involved in the debate.
The Sahrawi collectives estimate that between 80,000 and 120,000 persons are eligible for this nationality and, in part, the law seeks to remedy the half-century of "neglect" of the Spanish State since the signing of the agreements of 14 November 1975 by which Spain left the administration of Western Sahara.
The bill has gone through, as planned, with the support of members of the government, the abstention of the PP and Junts, and the vote against Vox.
