In the Basque Country, 370,000 people suffer from chronic pain every day, and the use of opioids has doubled in six years. This upturn has raised all the alarms and the abuse of these drugs is becoming a public health problem.

Experts warn of the urgent need to change the paradigm to treat permanent pain without falling into addiction.

According to the Department of Health, 37 of these 55 persons have had to be transferred to hospitals and health centres. The largest number of cases have occurred in Gipuzkoa (40), with the highest number of heat incidents on 24, 28 and 29 June.

Osakidetza is treating five children with oncological diseases in the hospitals of Cruces and Donostia. Yazan is one of those children who has been in Donostia with their mother for two months.
