The Bilbao City Council says it offered Kai Nakai, Maren and Olatz Salvador to act in the Circular Square, but they said "no"
Montage, the company responsible for setting up the Abandoibarra stage, will be sanctioned with 10% of the contract (€8,250), will not extend the concession by 2026 and will claim damages.
Itziar Urtasun, deputy councilwoman of the Bilbao Festival and Equality Area , said artists Kai Nakai, Maren and Olatz Salvador were offered to act in the Circular Square as an alternative to the Abandoibarra stage to avoid cancelling the Big Week concert, but they said "no."
Urtasun explained this at his own request during his appearance on 15 August last to explain the details of the cancellation of the concert of the three singers, which he recalled occurred because the company responsible, Montaketak, in charge of the Abandoibarra stage, did not complete the assembly in time.
When asked by the opposition groups whether damages will be claimed or the contract with the company will be extended, the councillor has confirmed that the penalty imposed is 10% of the contract, namely EUR 8250, and that, after the current phase of allegations by the company, the City Council will not extend this contract, and has also announced its intention to claim damages.
The councilman has explained that Kai Nakai was the only artist who was with him and spoke to him at all times, since he has specified that he was the only one who was in Abandoibarra at 8:00, when some members of the Festival Commission, led by Urtasun, went to the stage after the blow shot, after learning that Plan B was not possible at 6:00.
In this regard, he has stated that the conversation with Kai Nakai was "cordial at all times" and that he was asked to take the performance to Circular Square because "it was apparent that the stage in Abandoibarra would not be available" and that the City Council's objective was "to act at all times and not to leave the public without concerts".
The editor has explained that the interpreter asked for time because he had to consult with the other two singers, and the answer was' no 'because' they owe it to their public 'and he alone did not make a decision, which he thinks is' very correct '.
At that point, Kai Nakai showed him a video recorded for social media, which would later be published, suggesting that, according to Urtasun, "maybe a joint communication could be made," but, according to the councilman, the answer was again "no."
At this point, Urtasun has insisted that there was "never" a threat and has said that he does not understand the subsequent communiqué, which the City Council did not know, and has assured him that he does not know "many of the things that are mentioned in that statement, because we do not talk about it with them." "I have no answer for many of the things they write in the statement," he said.
The councilman has confirmed that the artists will "fully" collect the terms of their contract because the cancellation of the concert is by no means a responsibility attributable to them, but because the stage was not ready in time for reasons beyond the artist's control.
Asked if opposition groups (EH Bildu, PP and Elkarrekin Bilbao) are considering hiring to pay for them in the next Aste Nagusia, Urtasun has said that "it is still far away, it is early and there is still time, because you have to go step by step, and that is what you have to do."
