The Basque Government today presented the Innovation Headlights, a new strategic tool designed to prioritise economic resources and human capital in innovation . This initiative aims to give coherence to all government innovation policies and to consolidate the Basque Country as a European pole of high innovation.
The event was attended by President Imanol Pradales, Counsellor for Science, Universities and Innovation Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, Counsellor for Finance and Finance Noël D'Anjou and Counsellor for Industry, Energy Transition and Competitiveness Mikel Jauregi.
The new strategy is aligned with three major transitions: digital, energy and social, in which nine Innovation Headlights have been established that will set the course for innovation policy in the coming years.
The general purpose of headlights is to generate high level knowledge with the explicit aim of having an impact on society. These headlights will guide the development of research and activities that promote the discovery and development of disruptive innovations, understood as the generation of cutting-edge knowledge, with the aim of generating an economic or social impact in the short and medium term.
The lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, has highlighted in his speech the commitment of the Basque Government "We are choosing and risking, getting strong in what we are good at, focusing on strategic areas for the Basque Country", he said.
Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, Counsellor for Science, Universities and Innovation, has stressed that "the innovation headlights are designed to respond to the challenges posed to us by the three transitions and to find the right solutions to them." "In choosing the headlights and the lines of research and innovation that each of them brings together, we have taken very much into account our capabilities in science and innovation. We also want to lead the efforts of other institutions in this field and to be an economic and social institute."
The new strategy will be financed from the resources of the Innovation Fund and encourages the contribution of funds from other sources. The budget forecast for the coming years is based on the amounts allocated in the budgets of the Basque Government, with a budget of more than EUR 102 million by 2030 .
