The Basque Government will hire 8 more inspectors to increase control over tourist flats
The Minister for Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Javier Hurtado, has presented to the Basque Parliament next year's draft budget for his department, which amounts to EUR 56.5 million, 2% less than this year.
The Department of Tourism of the Basque Government will hire 8 new inspectors to increase control over tourist flats and the online platforms they offer, as announced on Thursday by the Counsellor for Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Javier Hurtado.
In this regard, the Councillor has stressed that there are now new control instruments, including the European Short Rent Araudia and the single digital window for tourist housing launched by the Spanish Government.
Hurtado has also pointed out that the so-called tourist fee will be operational soon.
The initial idea was that most of the tax collection should be collected by the municipalities and distributed to the rest of the sector.
In the end it will be a municipal tax, so the municipalities will receive it in full.
In order for the money to reach the sector as well, however, the Department of Tourism and Finance has agreed to approve an extra amount to be distributed among the accommodation, which will amount to EUR 1.5 million in the first year and EUR 2 million in the next year.

Draft budget 2026
Hurtado presented the budgets of his department for next year at his hearing in the Basque Parliament this morning. The Department of Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs will have a budget of EUR 56.6 million in 2026, 2% less than this year because it will not receive European funds.
The tourismarea will manage 23.1 million (9.6%), of which 10.2 million will go to the Basque Tourism Agency Basquetour.
Inthe area of trade, the Counsellor has stressed the need to give a strong boost to the sector: "We need to make a qualitative and quantitative leap and allocate more resources, not only economic but also human resources."
Finally, Kontsumobide-Basque Consumer Institute will have a budget of 8.6 million (5.9% more).
