More than 230 people have been rescued from a boat 429 kilometres from Gran Canaria
Salvamento Marítimo rescued 236 people in the early morning of Sunday, according to a provisional balance sheet, from a boat spotted by a merchant ship about 429 kilometres south of Gran Canaria.
Salvamento Marítimo has told EFE that all 236 rescued persons are from sub-Saharan Africa and that there are men, women and minors, but that when they land they will know more exactly what their condition is.
On Saturday morning, the ship Teos informed the National Maritime Rescue Centre that it had a boat standing on its side, carrying a large number of people, 232 nautical miles (429 kilometers) from Gran Canaria.
The merchant ship tied a rope to the boat, and asked for help. He explained to the rescue workers that the precarious ship was drifting because it had no engines.
