114 people died this summer in the Basque Country from heat, 52 more than in 2024
In August, 74 deaths were recorded, most of them between 11 and 22 of the month, on the hottest days.
Due to the heat, 114 people have died in the Basque Autonomous Community this summer, 52 more than in the same period of 2024.
Most of these deaths occurred in August , namely 74, 23 more than in the same month last year, where there was a heat wave lasting several days.
The data are collected in the calculationsof Daily Mortality Monitoring Ssystem (Momo), a system considered summer from May 15 to September 15.
A death toll was recorded in the Basque Country in May, 27 in June, 12 in July and 74 in August.
Asfor the August data, 51 deaths were over 65 years old, 48 were women and 26 men. Most of the deaths in August occurred between the 11th and 22nd of this month, during a warming that lasted several days.
In the State, 2,177 deaths from high temperatures were recorded in August, almost double those recorded in August 2024, with 1,271 deaths last year.
