Israel-Premier Tech eliminates the name of the jersey country
The Israel-Premier Tech team has removed the jersey from its cyclists in the Return to Spain from the 14th stage. The cyclists carry only the monogram of the Premier Tech, according to the Israeli team.
The decision, announced on social media, is aimed at "prioritizing the safety of cyclists and the platoon" in the face of ongoing protests in the cycling race. The group has stressed that the measure is in line with previous decisions on its corporate image.
In fact, La Vuelta 2024 is being interrupted several times by demonstrations in support of Palestine. The latest cases date back to the Angliru stage, when a group of demonstrators deployed a banner on the road and the end of the day in Bilbao, which was suspended "for security reasons".
The jersey that so far showed the team's full name dispenses with the word "Israel" as long as the competition continues, yet the Israeli sports structure insists that this change does not alter the team's official record in the race.
New protests in LaVuelta
There have been more pro-Palestinian mobilizations in Avilés, Asturias, coinciding with the departure of the 14th stage of the Return. Hundreds of people have carried Palestinian flags and shouted "boycott of Israel" and "Palestine victorious".
During the protest, the IU's General Coordinator in Asturias, Ovidio Zapico, said that "Palestine has won the Return" because of the broad mobilization of its citizens.
In addition, the political representative has urged the international community to stop the "genocide that Israel is committing" and has supported the Principality's decision.
