Almost all minors (92%) who are victims of sexual abuse in the Basque Country are girls, and the majority are under the age of 15, according to a report published this Thursday by the NGO Save the Children.
Specifically, it has analysed 88 judgments on sexual abuse of children from 2019 to 2024.
The data show that in 6 out of 10 cases the sentence takes more than two years and only 19.5% of cases in the first two years.
Also, in all the judgments examined, the accused was a man.
Withregard to the Spanish State, sexual abuse of minors begins at the age of 12 on average, and 8 out of 10 are girls or adolescents, and in 87.8 per cent of cases it is the only victim.
In the State, 345 judgments on sexual abuse of minors — 421 victims — have been reviewed.
One in three cases lasts more than three years, and there are also those that pass five years until there is a sentence.
According to the NGO, with the current system most victims are forced to recount what happened. Although in one in three cases the victim's testimony was recorded, it is still unusual. Moreover, in more than half of the cases in which it was recorded, the victim had to testify again.
Withregard to the profile of the sex offender, 98 per cent of the accused are men, and in 8 out of 10 cases he is known, usually a person from the area. The aggressor is unknown in less than 20 per cent of cases.
