Educators at the Summer Camps in Bernedo report "lies and transphobic attacks"
Educators participating in the Basque Summer Colonies in Bernedo have made a public statement following accusations against the project in recent weeks. They have explained that messages posted on social media and networks have used "lies, morbo and sensationalism" and have suffered "transphobic attacks" on mixed showers.
According to educators, in summer camps the priority is the well-being of children and young people. To ensure this, medical visits are made on each shift and they ensure that communication with families is guaranteed when necessary. "We have been in constant contact with families and we have always responded to their needs and concerns," they say.
They have also made it clear that the project is based on "Euskera, feminism and auzolan"and aims to create" safe and educational spaces "for children and young people. They have explained that showers, like all other activities, are" a tool for coexistence and normalization of all bodies ", with which they seek to break gender stereotypes and promote diversity.
Educators have recalled that the Bernedo colonies are a 50-year project involving thousands of children and young people over the years and that they understand participatory leisure as a tool for transformative education, stressing that it is a model based on "self-management and voluntary work."
Finally, they have thanked those who join the project and the messages of support received in recent weeks. "From the Euskera, feminism and auzolan, our goal is the enjoyment and education of children and young people. We will continue to work. "
