The sky of the Izki Natural Park (Álava) has just obtained the Starlight Destination certificate tosee the starry skies\u00A0 for its unique characteristics.
The quality of the sky, the provision of environmental education and the action on the environment of the destination are the aspects to be evaluated in order to determine the suitability of the space to be ensured.
Starlight targets must verify not only the means to ensure the quality and protection of their skies, but also the appropriate infrastructure and activities associated with the offer\u00A0.
The candidacy has valued initiatives that have been under way for years, such as the change of lighting that the people of Corres made in 2017 with the help of the Natural Park, the agreement with the astronomical society La Otro Mitad (for the use of the astronomical observatory), or the joint activities with the Alavesa Mountain Squad (highlighting the network of astronomical viewpoints in the region).
The audit process has focused on the analysis of destination products, such as the offer of accommodation, the means of observation available to visitors, the training of staff responsible for astronomical interpretation, among others, and their integration into the conservation of night nature.
After accreditation, the Natural Park must adopt a series of measures, which will be reflected in a work plan in the coming months, which will include a training plan, an agenda of activities and a proposal to make the lighting of the surrounding villages more sustainable."Izki's natural park makes its magnificent landscapes and biodiversity more attractive and adds a new perspective to its educational and tourism offer, with its night sky as a new banner," said Saray Zárate, MP for the Department of Economic Development and Sustainability.
"With this action, the Provincial Council of Álava intends to value the quality of the night sky and to promote measures to protect it, within the framework of actions aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the natural arc," the responsible foral said.
