The pope has accepted the resignation of the bishop of Cadiz shortly after the news of the investigation into sexual abuse was released
Zornoza filed his resignation 15 months ago, when he reached retirement age, but has now received an answer after leaking the charge of paedophilia.
Pope Leon XIV has accepted the resignation of the Bishop of Cadiz, Rafael Zornoza, who presented it 15 months ago, when the prelates had reached retirement age, but has made his decision following allegations of sexual abuse of a minor at the Getafe seminary.
In Saturday's bulletin, the Vatican reports that the pope has accepted his resignation without explaining (as usual) the reasons for his decision.
For the time being, no successor has been appointed, and the auxiliary bishop of Seville, Ramón Valdivia, was appointed apostolic administrator, as reported by the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
About fifteen months ago, at the age of 75, Zornoza made his office available to the pope, but he had not accepted it because of the change of pope.
However, it is customary for him to resign and not to accept it for a while until he is found a substitute.
According to the newspaper El País, the Doctrine of the Faith had been investigating Zornoza for four months, accusedof sexually assaulting a minor when he was a priest in Getafe, Madrid, in the 1990s.
On the other hand, Leon XIV , in answering a media question last Tuesday, explained that "the investigation must be allowed to continue" and then "the conclusions" will come.
Zornoza defended her innocence, but she canceled her schedule to clarify what happened and get treatment for severe cancer.
