UEMA has argued that 2026 should be "the year of consolidation of the plots of the new language policy."
The Commonwealth of Basque Municipalities (UEMA) today held its end-of-year meeting in Etxarri Aranatz, at which they welcomed two other towns, Urdiain and Zeberio, with which 120 municipalities are already part of UEMA and a community of 355,000 inhabitants.
The President of UEMA, Martin Aramendi, has said that the language policy so far has given the impression that it is time to change and that it is up to the public institutions to respond to it.
"The demolinguistic projection predicts what the situation of the Euskera will bein 2036 unless there is a change, and the consequences have raised all the red alarms , because it shows that the airspaces are on the way to extinction, and in general there are signs of regression in all areas, "Aramendi said.
"Thousands and thousands of citizens asked for justice, legal protection and encouragement for the Euskera in front of the municipalities in July, and it is up to us to respond to that in 2026 by agreeing on the necessary changes, "he has reflected and has also indicated that, along this path, UEMA will" make every effort "to reach" agreements so that the Euskera has real legal protection. "
"We have come this far, and all the data and indications show that it is time to change. It is therefore time for change. It will be the citizens and Euskaltzales who will be in the streets who will be responsible for the new Renaissance."
In this regard, in reference to the "new Renaissance", UEMA has joined the event that the Council has organised in Bilbao for 27 December and has been invited to attend.
