Verter Recycling has not taken any action to prevent further accidents at the Zaldibar dump

Just six years after the collapse of the Zaldibar landfill, the Basque Government's environmental technicians have issued a report stating thatinfrastructure managers, Verter Recycling , have not taken any action to prevent any further accidents.

At the request of EH Bildu, the technicians have inspected the infrastructure and, at the end of September last year, received 29 infringements , including the fact that the leachate drainage system has not been properly updated and that, as a result, polluting waters are leaking to the ground and there is a risk of flooding and landslides due to accumulated waste.

According to measurements by the Gipuzkoa Waters Agency, within a year, this infrastructure has exceeded the safe level of ammonia by 10 times , and experts warn that the Zaldibar landfill has no environmental liability insurance .

This report was prepared in response to a question from EH Bildu MP Ander Goikoetxea, who last Friday was sent to the Basque Parliament byIndustry Advisor Mikel Jauregi and published on his website.

For its part, the Basque Government claims from Verter Recycling EUR 29 million in compensation for the search for the workers Joaquín Beltrán and Alberto Sololuze, who were hit by the 2020 collapse, and the temporary stabilisation of the land.
