Osakidetzawill install equipmentfrom the Basque Protontherapy Unit in October and plans to start treatment for the first patients in January 2028. This infrastructure has a total investment of 61.38 million euros and will strengthen the assistance capacity of the Basque public network. Thus, it will place Euskadi at the forefront of the radiation therapy treatment of cancer.
This was explained this Thursday morning by the Deputy Director of Health Infrastructure of Osakidetza , Unai Zulueta, and the Head of the Clinical Management Unit of Oncology, Txema Urraca, who visited the media to see the current state of the works of the new building where this equipment will be located.
The new unit will help improve the care of patients in and around the CVC by establishing a reference resource for maximum precision and toxicity treatments.
The launch of the Basque Protontherapy Unit is also part of the strategic lines of the BasqueCountry Health Pact, which aims to boost innovation, incorporate new technologies into the health system and develop modern, accessible and well-coordinated infrastructures. In addition, the project responds to the priority of strengthening oncological care with more advanced resources capable of improving the accuracy of treatment and the quality of care for people with cancer.
Strategic infrastructure
The new unit uses high-precision technologyto treat the tumor in a more localized way and to reduce damage to healthy tissues, a particularly important advantage when the tumor is close to delicate organs or seeks to reduce the side effects of treatment.
Protontherapy expands the therapeutic possibilities available for medical equipment and provides more personalized , accurate and secure treatments that in many cases will improve care for paediatric patients and adults with complex or difficult to locate tumors.
Radiothermal oncology is part of the treatment of about 60% of people diagnosed with cancer and aims to cure it alone or, in about 40% of cases, combined with other treatments. With this unit, Osakidetza has added another tool to advance towards treatments that are better adapted to each patient.
