The anti-aggression device will be activated in Bilbao on Saturday for Big Week
The Bilbao City Council and Bilboko Konpartsak have jointly renewed the specific protocol for male aggression.
The Bilbao City Council will launch next Saturday , August 22, coinciding with the start of the Aste Nagusia, a strategy of aggression against male, racist and LGTBIQ+ community attacks, which includes the distribution of cards and stickers on hotphones.
The Bilbao City Council presented its campaign against the attacks on Wednesday at an event held at the Arriaga theatre, in which the mayor, Juan María Aburto, was accompanied by the Equality and Festivities Councillor, Itziar Urtasun, members of Bilboko Konpartsak and social and cultural agents.
Under the mottoMaximum Respect, the device will be launched for the third consecutive year.
"Political, social or cultural contexts can never be an excuse to violate fundamental rights," Aburto said at a press conference, stressing that Bilbao "will not take a step backwards" in defending these principles.
The mayor has also asked those who are visiting the city these days: "We want everyone to be clear what Bilbao is not prepared to accept: we do not tolerate macho, racist or LGTBIQ+phobic attacks, nor hate speech. "
On the other hand, Urtasun has claimed freedom as one of the "undeniable" values of the city and the holidays, and has called for the involvement of the whole of society in prevention.
Purple dots
The device will maintain the purple spots that the City Council has been installing since 2022 in Abandoibarra, Parque Europa, Pergola and Circular Square in Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park , to which will be added the one that will be installed this year at the Evaristo Churruca Pier .
These will include personnel trained in gender-based attacks and hate incidents to cater for those in need.
Victims of male violence will receive 24-hour care through the Municipal Social Emergency Service, the Municipal Police and the Ertzaintza, as well as psychological and legal assistance.
For hate riots and racist and anti-LGBTQ attacks, there will be a care and counselling service with specialized teams for nine days.
The City Council has republished the three protocols for action in eight languages: Basque, Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Romanian and Portuguese.
Renews protocol with Bilboko Konpartsak
Together with Bilboko Konpartsak, the City Council has renewed its specific protocol for male aggression during the Aste Nagusia, which includes interculturality and the LGTBIQ+ approach, and has published an information guide in four languages.
In addition, cards and stickers have been designed with hotlines and encouraged to download the 112 SOS Deiak app of the Basque Government, which allows to alert emergency services by geolocation and has a specific section for male attacks.
