Juan Sebastián Elcano's landing is staged in Getaria this Friday

The streets of Getaria (Gipuzkoa) will become the scene of the return of Juan Sebastián Elcano this Friday . Dozens of citizens dressed in vintage costumes will stage the symbolic landing of the navigator in an edition that coincides with the fifth centenaryof his death.
On September 6, 1522, theexpedition arrived in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cadiz, with only 18 of the 239 men who had embarked on the voyage alive, thus completing the first round of the world .
Getaria remembers this feat every four years , through a celebration created in 1922, in which the people paid tribute to Elcano on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the expedition, and since then the landing has become a significant historical reconstruction because it combines dissemination, tradition and maritime heritage .
