Irun urges the Basque Government to launch Operation Return after long withholding at the AP-8

The municipality has activated the special plan that only local vehicles can drive through the centre. The mayor, Cristina Laborda, has asked the Basque Government to already put in place the special device to prevent crowds from "collapsing" the municipality.

The AP-8has recorded holds of up to 11 kilometres on Friday in Irun (Gipuzkoa) from the Biriatou border crossing and in the  direction towards Baiona, according to the Department of Safety and Security.

Traffic incidents have reached GI-636  ere, at the height of the Irun bypass and some roads in the town, after 13 kilometres of withholding in the direction of Baiona this Thursday.

In view of this situation, the Irun City Councilactivated on Friday a special device of the Local Police , which provides for restrictions on movement for non-local vehicles. The City Council advises to avoid the AP-8 and GI-636 roads in the sense of the border and requires citizens to use public transport whenever possible .

Irun calls for advance of Operation Return

In this context, Mayor Cristina Laborda has asked the Basque Government to advance the activation of the special device of Operation Return to strengthen the response in the interurban network and prevent traffic jams from reaching the city.

It has also called, in view of the situation on Thursday, for the lifting of barriers at tolls in order to speed up traffic and prevent the 'collapse' of the main roads from reaching secondary roads and the streets of Irun.

The City Council says the traffic jams are due to international traffic pressure and damage caused by controls and other measures in France. Laborda further states that it is necessary to advance infrastructure such as the South Bypass in order to have opportunities to reduce pressure on major access to the city.

The hundreds of women who arrived in Ceuta from Morocco remain in a particularly appalling situation. UNICEF is experiencing the crisis closely: they report that there are not enough police and that there are officers who cannot help them.
