The number of deaths in the CSC is almost twice that of births
Deaths were 6,253 in the first quarter of the year, 0.8 per cent less than the previous year, and 3,008 more than those born.
In the first quarter of 2026, 6,253 people died in the ACV, which is 0.8% less than in the same period of the previous year, according to data provided on Monday by the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat.
The growth in the Basque Autonomous Community was negative from January to March of this year, with 3,008 more deaths than births.
By territory, the population was lost in all three, with 1,622 more deaths in Bizkaia, 1,033 in Gipuzkoa and 353 in Álava.
On a monthly basis, deaths fell from the same period in 2025 in February and March by 2.8 per cent and 4.6 per cent, respectively, while deaths rose by 4.1 per cent in January.
By historical territory, Gipuzkoa recorded 2,111 deaths, the most significant relative increase being 5.9 per cent.
In Álava there were 880 deaths, 2.9% more, in Bizkaia 3,262, 5.6% less.
By sex, 3,312 women and 2,941 men died, while women increased by 0.2 per cent and men by 1.9 per cent.
Among the deaths in this first quarter,the number of children under one year of age was 9 (0.1%) andthe number of children under one hundred years of age 134 (2.1%).
The main causes of death in the first quarter of 2026 were diseases and tumors of the circulatory system, which caused 1,530 and 1,476 deaths, respectively, accounting for 48.1 per cent of all deaths.
