Trump has announced a new tariff plan of at least 10%, but it will not enter into force until August 7
The US president has extended the entry into force of tariffs until 7 August, including those applied to imports from the European Union.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new tariff plan new that will enter into force from August 7, six days later than planned, imposing a 30% levy on several countries that have not concluded a trade agreement in time, while at the same time reassuring those that have reached it.
The new minimum ratefor nations where the United States has a negative trade balance is 15%, as reported by the White House in an executive order issued hours before the deadline given to trading partners in July to negotiate a new tariff.
Some 40 countries, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela or Bolivia, depend on this decision.
For those who have a positive balance with the United States, the tariff will be 10%.
"A year ago AMERICA WAS A DEAD COUNTRY, NOW IT'S THE MOST ATTRACTIVE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD," Trump told Truth Social.
Most countries have reduced tariffs, compared to the list published by Trump on April 2.
The European Union was one of the last players to reach a trade agreement with Washington, and this was reflected in Trump's executive order, which imposed a 15% tariff on most European products.
They also managed to understand with South Korea or the United Kingdom, so that the export burden to the United States was 15% and 10%, respectively.
Cambodia (49% to 19%), Lesoto (50% to 15%) and Vietnam (46% to 20%) have also significantly reduced tariffs.
On the contrary, three countries did not notice a reduction and tariffs have been increased: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Switzerland.
The United States has imposed a tax of more than 30% on most nations that have not reached a treaty. The highest tariffs are in Syria (41%), Laos (40%) and Burma (Myanmar), with 39% in Switzerland.
All tariffs, however, have not responded to purely commercial reasons.
At the same time as the White House published the tariff adjustment, it has also announced that it will tax 35% of Canadian products, but in this case because it declared that the border country "has not cooperated to stop the continued flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs and has taken retaliation against the United States" for the President's actions to combat this unusual threat.
Brazil, in addition to the "universal" tax of 10%, has been imposed another 40% additional tax against it for the ongoing trial against former President Jair Bolsonaro, a political ally of the US president.
In the case of Mexico, Trump has spoken to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, after which he announced a 90-day moratorium on the imposition of most tariffs on Mexico.
"Trump is restoring America's economic sovereignty by reducing its dependence on foreign countries, boosting $1 trillion in investment in the United States and creating hundreds of thousands of well-paid jobs for the United States, ultimately prioritizing trade," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday at a press conference.
Washington and Beijing reached a temporary agreement whereby the US lowered tariffs from 145% to 30%, while China reduced US property taxes from 125% to 10%.
The two countries are in the midst of negotiations to reach a final treaty before the end of this suspension on August 12, a deadline that could be extended to ensure the success of the "doing well" talks, Trump said this week.
In addition tothese general tariffs, Trump maintains those imposed at the time on aluminum and steel (50%) and reiterated that various copper products will receive the same load from the entry into force of the new charges, with the exception of the cathodes exported by Chile and other countries.
